Cape May Brewing Launches New Location
Last month, legislators, dignitaries, community leaders, and members of the media descended upon Cape May Brewery Brewery for the official launch of the company's second location at Cape May Airport, a 15,000 square foot warehouse that was under renovation for a year and a half. During his speech, Senator Jeff Van Drew praised CMBC for epitomizing entrepreneurial spirit, and "turning something that was nothing into something extraordinary," while Congressman Frank LoBiondo called Cape May Brewery a great example of the American dream. Later, he confided that CMBC's summer Bog is "my new favorite beer of all time; it goes down very easy, which can be... dangerous." For more on the ribbon cutting -- including what the mothers of CMBC's fearless leaders had to say about the whole thing -- visit their blog.
After the party, it was back to business as usual, which at CMBC means a cool and constant flurry of activity. They began brewing in their new, 30-barrel brewhouse, and released two anticipated summer brews: Geek Out 2.0 and Queen Street Beach Plum Ale. The latter, made with wild yeast found on grapes growing just outside the brewery, was infused with pomace, the crushed skins and seeds of beach plums pressed by a local restaurant for cocktails. Viva la sustainability!
Meanwhile, CMBC served as exclusive beer sponsor for the Exit Zero International Jazz Festival (picture 100 world-class musicians jiving at multiple Cape May venues for three-straight days), and was honored by TripAdvisor for "consistently great reviews." Speaking of cool hat tips, the company's Cape May Saison, Tripel Wreck and Devil's Reach brews all took home medals this week from the Beverage Testing Institute, bringing the brewery's award count for 2015 up to 14.
For more info on everything from upcoming events, to CMBC's sexy new glassware, to the complicated feat that is transporting a fermenter with two forklifts and a prayer, check out the Cape May Brew Co blog, Straight To The Pint; visit capemaybrewery.com; or better yet, stop in for a tour and tasting.
Cricket Hill Introducing Bourbon Barrel Aged Russian Imperial Stout
Visit the 12 tap Tasting Room at Cricket Hill Brewery to enjoy year round, seasonal, small batch and Tasting Room exclusive brews. The weekend of June 4th-6th they are introducing their limited edition Bourbon Barrel Aged Russian Imperial Stout, 8.9ABV, 91 IBU. Like the BBA Imperial Porter and BBA Festivus before it, this full bodied beer has been aged in oak barrels that had Buffalo Trace Bourbon in them before they added the RIS. After 150 days of aging, this beer is smooth with notes of dark chocolate.
Cricket Hill is happy to report another batch of Jersey Devil Imperial Red Ale (7.4% ABV 66.6 IBU) was brewed on May 15th. Although this beer is not scheduled for release in 2015 until September, it has become one of the most popular beers at the Tasting Room. Should be mid-late June.
The Cricket Hill El Diablo limited release beer was a HUGE hit for the May 21st release weekend. This spicy version of Jersey Devil Imperial Red Ale is infused with roasted habanero peppers, 7.4 ABV, 66.6 IBU. While it quickly sold out, they are brewing another batch for later this summer!
To kick off the first weekend before summer, Cricket Hill is offering a special at the Tasting Room! Buy a case of Jersey Summer Breakfast Ale and get a Jersey Summer T-shirt for only $10!
Flying Fish Releases Two Draft Summer Seasonals
Starting with the premiere at Philly Beer Week, Flying Fish has two draft summer seasonals out this month.
Brotherly Suds IV-Philly Pharmhouse
An annual collaboration between regional breweries including Yards, Victory, Iron Hill, Troegs, Sly Fox and more, Flying Fish was selected to brew this year's version. A Philly take on a Belgian Farmhouse style ale, this crisp, refreshing offering provides aromas of spice and mustard. Flavors of golden wheat, salt and mustard seed. Kind of like a soft pretzel.
Gone Fish'n IPA
An American Style IPA. Aromatics of grapefruit and tropical fruits. Soft citrus notes lead to a herbal bitterness and clean finish from the Warrior, Citra, Azacca and Simcoe hops. A sessionable beer, but be careful, it comes at 7% ABV.
Krogh's Bringing on the Belgians
June and July bring Belgian beers to Krogh's Restaurant & Brew Pub in picturesque Lake Mohawk! First is a Belgian Dubbel, a deep, reddish brown, moderately strong, malty, complex Belgian ale. This ale supports a large, dense and long-lasting creamy off-white head. Belgian Dubbels first originated at monasteries in the Middle Ages. Second is a Belgian Witt, an unfiltered Belgian wheat beer with hints of orange and coriander. This is a thirst-quenching, satisfyingly sweet summer beer. The term "wit" translates as "white," which results from the cloudiness of this pale wheat-based beer. Find them at 23 White Deer Plaza in the heart of Sparta. Call ahead for specific availability at 973-729-8428 or go to their website.

Third State Joins the Brewing Revolution
New Jersey, known as the "Crossroads of the Revolution" was the third former colony to ratify the Constitution of the United States of America. Third State Brewing is now at the "Crossroads of a Brewing Revolution" as the newest addition to the growing craft beer industry in Burlington and Camden Counties. Located at 352 High Street in the Historic District of Burlington City, they have received all required approvals and have started production. The 7-barrel brew house and tasting room is targeting a mid-May opening.
Cape May Brewing Makes Everything Alright with Gordon Ramsay
Cape May Brewing Company was pretty excited last month when, at the grand opening of his eponymous pub and grill in Atlantic City, culinary hero/villain Gordon Ramsay tapped a CMBC firkin before calling the SOJO beer inside "very beautiful," and saying that "after a long day in the kitchen, that stuff makes everything alright."
But this month brings the excitement level even higher.
"On a scale of 1-10, we're at purple," says President Ryan Krill.
That's because May 8th will mark the official opening of CMBC's second location, a 15,000 square foot warehouse at Cape May Airport that's been under renovation for over a year. State senators, assemblymen, dignitaries and young entrepreneurs will participate in the much-anticipated ribbon cutting.
"We used to fantasize about this event back when the brewery was just a concept," says President Ryan Krill. "We wondered what it would be like to have people caring about us and our expansion moves. Now that it's come to fruition, we fantasize about taking it to the next level."
In the meantime, the boys behind the beer are busy brewing in both a 15-barrel and 30-barrel system, shipping to 300 accounts throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and maintaining their tasting room's calling card: greatest selection in the state.
Seasonal additions to the menu include The Bog, a cranberry wheat shandy that Lead Brewer Brian Hink calls "uber-drinkable;" The Blonde, a Kolsch-like brew with clean bitterness and strong yeast character; and Sophisticated Lady, a citrusy, snappy and thirst-quenching summer favorite.

They will also be on the Battleship NJ in June with other members of the Garden State Craft Brewers Guild with three offerings. Flying Fish Big Bottle Releases
Coming your way this month are 750 ml bottles of Flying Fish Pescado Rojo, a hoppy red ale aged in Cuervo 100% Agave Tradicional tequila barrels. These barrels were shipping from Mexico. The brewery then aged and dry hopped the beer in the barrels. They were then shipped back to Cuervo where Tradicional tequila is being aged in them and will be released in the June/July time frame. Pescado Rojo just started shipping to NJ retailers. There are less than 300 cases so it will be gone pretty quickly. A limited number of bottles is also available at the brewery.
NJ 351 is a bourbon barrel aged version of NJ350, brewed last year to commemorate NJ's 350 anniversary. The fresh Breckenridge bourbon barrels impart a distinctive character to the beer as well as draws out the molasses character of the original version. This extremely limited run of approximately 100 cases is only available for sale at the brewery during Wednesday-Sunday tasting room hours.

Peoples Choice Award for Cape May Brewing
After its cross-country journey, the new 30-barrel brewhouse for Cape May Brewing Company has been installed, and it's the piece de resistance to the operation's much-anticipated expansion into a second location, a 15,000 square-foot warehouse that's been under renovation for over a year. This brings CMBC's production brewery count up to two, both located in the industrial complex of the Cape May Airport. There will be a ribbon cutting for the new space in early May, when legislators and members of the press will take a gander at the gleaming, three-vessel system that, in its first year, will produce up to 15,000 barrels of tasty beer.
Speaking of tasty beer, March was the month of awards for CMB recipes. Out of 150 breweries on site, and thanks to 25,000 patrons, CMB took home the People's Choice Award at the 10th Annual Atlantic City Beer and Music Festival. Said one event-goer, explaining his non-surprise: "These brews are sensual and erotic." Said festival organizer Jon Henderson: "Jersey's coming out with some good freaking beer... and Cape May is producing consistently good styles." CMB also took home the Jersey Brewery of the Year Award from the New York International Beer Competition, where our refreshing Berliner Weisse, Tower 23, won for German-style sour ale of the year. And from the World Beer Championships, CMB brews swept five medals: a bronze for the South Jersey Secession Session; a silver each for the Mop Water Ale, Biscuits and Honey ESB, and Coastal Evacuation Double IPA; and a Gold for the easy-drinking Blonde.
Coming up, you'll have a chance to try some of these award-winning styles at beer pairing dinners throughout south Jersey. We've still got four left to go this month, beginning with the four-course, masterpiece of a meal being dished up by the casually elegant Coastal Blue restaurant at Diamond Beach (5pm on April 11). For details on the oh-so savory menu (think fresh sea scallops, crispy pork belly and boneless beef shortrib with smoked bacon glaze), or for info on any of the other events CMB has on tap this month, click here.
Finally, fearless CMB leader Ryan Krill, President of the Garden State Craft Brewers Guild, will be rolling out the association's kickass new website shortly. Stay tuned.

Krogh's Rolling Out Wee Heavy Cask
Krogh's Restaurant & Brew Pub at 23 White Deer Plaza in Sparta welcomes April with two Casks and one Seasonal. The casks are a Kilt Lifter Wee Heavy and a Stickebier. The Wee Heavy Cask (wee meaning small as in amount served and heavy meaning a high alcohol content) is a copper-colored Scottish ale that is sweet with a complex malt character. This cask has caramel notes and rum barrel spiciness from aging in oak Caribbean rum barrels. It also has a warm alcohol presence at 9.2% AbV. The Stickebier Cask is malty and full-bodied with a relatively high alcohol content. Stickebier is German slang for "secret brew." Krogh's April Seasonal on tap will be an Altbier. "Alt" refers to the old-style of brewing; this is a clean and relatively bitter beer balanced by malt character. Please call ahead for specific availability (973) 729-8428 or check their website.

Cape May Brewing Nears Completion on Major New Expansion
Cape May Brewing Company is approaching the entire month of March more lion than lamb. CMB's new building at the Cape May Airport looked like something out of The Walking Dead when renovations began a little over a year ago. The 15,000-square-foot space, which used to house a wallpaper-swatch company, had been sitting vacant for over a decade. But now, a one-million-dollar renovation is nearly complete and the final piece -- a spanking new 30-barrel, three-vessel brew house -- is on the way. It's a thing of beauty, and quite the far cry from CMB's original, 12-gallon pilot apparatus. Keep your ears open about a ribbon cutting happening sometime in April. No zombies, we promise.
In the meantime, CMB is moving full-steam (full-brew?) ahead with their current set-up -- they're in the midst of a six-new-beers-in-six-weeks series, a schedule which includes several anticipated spring releases. On March 4th, the Vienna-style lager Bringing Sexy Bock made it's sexy return to the tasting room. On March 12th, Justin's NIU Toasted Coconut IPA -- brewed with 40 pounds of organic hand-toasted coconut -- will also be available. Beginning March 19th, look for the Take Five Session IPA, which Brew Master Brian Hink has been dreaming up for over a year. Then there's the Cape May Saison, blended with coriander and sweet orange peel, coming at you on March 26th. Also out this month is the Corrosion Sour IPA (CMB is still the only one in the state making sours and this one, with its HUGE nose of citrus, is a HUGE reason to give the genre a try.) Last but not least, there's Tower 23, a Berliner Weisse named for a local World War II lookout tower. It's tart and refreshing with almost no hop bitterness, so "lookout" for great taste (sorry).
Cape May Brewery will be pouring at both the Philly Craft Beer Festival on March 7th at Philadelphia's Navy Yard, and the AC Beer and Music Fest on March 20th and 21st at Atlantic City's Convention Center. Be there or be thirsty. They'll also be taking over taps at The Ugly Mug in Cape May on March 12th. Live entertainment, great burgers, six craft beers. Boom.

With 2015 nearly a quarter of the way through already, it's truly been a Happy New Year of Happy New Yeasts at Village Idiot Brewing Company in Mt. Holly! The inclusion of several new yeast strains into the brewery's repertoire has yielded great results and the proof is in the beer. VIBC's Chief Brewing Officer, Vince Masciandaro, explains: "We've tried new yeasts on some fan favs with great results," he says. "Our popular Belgian-style tripel is more to style, for instance. It's also allowed us to introduce several new continental beers into our lineup -- a Bavarian Dunkelweisen and a Belgian Dubbel, for instance. We just finished brewing a wit-style beer which, hopefully, will signal the coming of warmer weather."
Village Idiot Brewing Company's beers are only available at their "Main-street" brewery and tasting room located on High Street in Mt. Holly. Cape May Brewing Co. is now Jersey Fresh
Is there such a thing as Jersey Fresh beer?
There is now that Cape May Brewing Co. is officially the first brewery to carry the
"Made with Jersey Fresh" label for its Honey Porter beer. The beer is described as
roasted with dark crystal malts that shine through in a smooth and light-bodied
porter that is balanced by a hint of sweetness thanks to the local Jersey Fresh
honey. The brewery gets its honey from a local South Jersey supplier and will use
different varieties depending on the season including blueberry, butterbean, clover,
and wildflower honey. "Each variety has its own subtle nuances, so it's nice that the
flavor profile can change with the seasons," remarked Chris Henke, co-owner.
To make a batch of Honey Porter, the brewery goes through a lot of honey. Usually
a pound of honey for every five gallons and they typically make 500 gallons at a
time. Using local honey is not the most affordable option, but using fresh, local
ingredients is important to the brewery. "We are a part of the fabric of our
community and using local ingredients represents our commitment to New Jersey.
Using South Jersey honey is exciting because it tells a story about the beer and
about who we are as brewers," said Ryan Krill, co-owner. In addition to using local
ingredients, they also give their spent grain to local farmers.
The brewery had to go through an application process and an onsite inspection to
get approval to use the Jersey Fresh logo. " We are very happy working with them
and look forward to having more Jersey Fresh beers in the future," said Robert Krill,
co-owner who was present for the inspection process.
Tuckahoe Brewing is Expanding With a New Brewery
Tuckahoe Brewing Company will soon be available to more craft beer fans in New Jersey. Today, the company announces plans to increase its production capacity and distribution area in response to the overwhelming demand for its locally crafted beer.
The expansion includes a new 10,000 square foot facility, located in Egg Harbor Township, NJ. to include a tasting room and retail space. This expansion of Tuckahoe Brewing Company will be its first since its founding in 2011.
The new building will house a custom built, 5 year old, 15-barrel three-vessel brew house from Diversified Metal Engineering of Charlottetown, Canada; two 30-barrel fermentation vessels and two 15-barrel fermentation vessels. The new brew house and cellar will give Tuckahoe Brewing Company the capacity to increase their production by over 300%, with plenty of room for additional growth. They will continue to brew their signature beers and will significantly increase their bottling capacity.

Festivus Miracle Delivered by Village Idiot
Village Idiot Brewing Company in Mt. Holly stuffed 200 happy stockings during the holidays with its first-ever limited bottle release of its Festivus Miracle beer. The unique dark sour brew was developed over the course of 7 months with additions of cocoa nibs, oak chips, honey from raspberry bushed and dark, sweet cherries. The 1.5-barrel brewery produced just 200 -- filled in 750 ml brown champagne bottles, capped, labeled, dipped in sealing wax and individually numbered -- all by hand. Craft beer fans lined up beginning at 8 a.m. for the noon release braving the cold and intermittently pummeled by rain. Nonetheless, the line stretched from the front door up High Street, down Commerce Street and into the adjacent parking lot. When the doors opened, the line moved quickly and orderly and 194 bottles were sold by day's end. The balance quickly sold the day after Christmas. The beer is the small brewery's highest-rated beer to date. Photo snapped by customer Chris Rush.
Looking ahead to 2015, the very popular Notafinah! Winter Warmer will make it's new-year debut any day now. Available in the tasting room in half and full pints, customers can request a sugar-cinnamon-rimmed glass -- or get it to go in one of Village Idiot Brewing Company's Crowlers(r). Upcoming beers also include Oatmeal Chocolate Stout featuring cocoa nibs from craft chocolatier Mast Bros.of Brooklyn, NY -- and new styles from the "main-street" brewery and tasting room including a Belgian Golden Strong, Belgian Dubbel and German Dunkels. Best way to get the low down on their weekly offerings is their Facebook page.

Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Porter Available at Cricket Hill
The latest from Cricket Hill:
Cold weather; what a change from only a couple of weeks ago! Keeping up with this change is what Cricket Hill Seasonal beers and our small batch beers are all about.
How are we battling this cold, you ask? Well let's start with our Bourbon Barrel aged Imperial Porter! Here is the perfect Winter warmer at 7.5% ABV, aged for over 100 days in Kentucky Bourbon barrels! The result is a magnificent blend of flavors emanating from a dark Ale with a foamy beige head! A delightfully smooth and aromatic masterpiece! Available in 22oz. bottles.
The Cricket Hill current small batch is our Russian Imperial Stout! 8.9%ABV. This is only our second release of a Stout and it is wonderful. It begins with a roasty, dark chocolate and coffee nose then bring on the earthy hops and dark fruit tastes. The flavor finishes with bittersweet dark chocolate. Who cares about the cold!
The 2015 release calendar and description sheets are available at the brewery! Come by and enjoy a tour of our brewery while sipping on some of the best beers ever made on the planet Earth!
Our tour hours are Thursdays 4-7pm, Fridays 4-7pm and Saturdays 12-4pm. If you happen to stop by this weekend you can see our bottle filler being rebuilt. Last week, the heart and soul of our bottling line decided to blow a main bearing so we are spending a week and a half changing all of her bearings!
Remember that our tasting room with 12 taps serves beers that can only be tasted at the brewery! Visiting us for a tasting is an adventure that changes every several days!
Be certain to stop at the Cloverleaf Tavern in Caldwell on January 20th for New Jersey Beer night, and of course we will see you at the International beer festival on the 31st at the Meadowlands!

Join the Village Idiot One Year Anniversary Party this Saturday, December 13
Village Idiot Brewing Company, located on High Street in Mt. Holly, will mark its one-year anniversary in December. The event is guaranteed to be celebrated with a bang as it coincides with the Battle of Ironworks Hill that took place right outside the brewery's front door during the Revolutionary War. Redcoats and "regulars" from the revolutionary army will recreate the epic battle on December 13 beginning at 3 PM. For more info, go to ironworkshill.org.
On the beer front, the Village Idiot 1.5-barrel brewery and tasting room launched its newest cold-weather offering, Notafingah -- a 7.5% ABV chestnut-colored winter warmer. It is available from the tasting room in half pints, pints and growlers to go. Speaking of growlers, Village Idiot Brewing Company is also one of just a handful of places around the country to offer craft beer enthusiasts a Crowler® for beer to go. The crowler® is an innovative twist on a traditional glass growler. Beer is poured into the 32 oz., single-use can and sealed fresh on a throw-back canning machine that you have to see to believe. The method purges oxygen from the brew and blocks light, allowing the beer to stay fresh far longer than its glass counterpart.
Finally, the brewery will have its first limited bottle release with its Festivus Miracle Beer. This dark, sour, wonderfully complex hybrid old bruin-style ale began its journey 7 months ago. Its evolution was closely monitored and nurtured with the addition of cocoa nibs, oak chips, cocoa, honey from raspberry bushes and sweet, dark cherries. Pairs perfectly with airing of grievances, feats of strength, aluminum poles and bagels from H&H. All proceeds benefit the Human Fund -- Money for People. Best wishes from the guys for happy holidays and a wonderful new year!
First Tripel from Cricket Hill
December will bring in the first Belgian Tripel from Cricket Hill Brewing Company. The Small Batch - Belgian Tripel is a golden ale with an aroma of banana and clove with citrus and fruity spice undertones. It has a light medium body that finishes dry. The ABV 8.7% gives hints of alcohol while 31 IBUs would keep the Abbey Monks happy!
In very limited quantities at the brewery only, Cricket Hill will be pouring their Holiday Red Rye! This special brew with flavors of tropical fruit, a grapefruit finish and a hint of rye boasts an ABV of 7.4% with 66IBUs!
Flying Fish Exit 1 Bayshore Oyster Stout Now Shipping
Now out is the second winter seasonal from Flying Fish Brewing Company: Exit 1, an export style stout brewed with local oysters. The creamy flavor of English chocolate and roasted malts harmonizes with minerals from Delaware Bay Eastpoint oysters added to the brew kettle (and then gobbled up by the brewers 15 minutes later). Irish ale yeast adds a bit of fruitiness and a dry crispness. This rich stout is perfect for cool weather--and especially delicious when paired with a few Jersey oysters on the half shell.
